Though most Americans associate November with football and Thanksgiving, there’s plenty of events around the world that promise to put a new twist on your typical November routine.

From painting your face in Mexico to making a wish in Thailand, here’s your guide to 5 must-see global events this November.

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)

Where: Mexico City – Mexico

When: October 31 – November 2

What to expect: During this two-day festival of colorful decor, food, and music, families across Mexico gather in cemeteries and join parades to honor deceased loved ones.

Perhaps known best for its elaborate skeletal makeup and costumes, this celebration of life after death is one of Mexico’s most dazzling can’t-miss events of the year.

Denver International Wine Festival

Where: Denver, CO

When: November 1-3

What to expect: This premier festival hits its 13 year stride this November as wine lovers across the country gather to enjoy some of the world’s finest wines.

Attendees will enjoy a food-and-wine pairing competition featuring all Colorado chefs, tastings of over 400 different wines, beers and spirits, educational seminars, and tours of three local wineries. Snag your tickets early and come thirsty!

Iceland Airwaves

Where: Reykjavik, Iceland

When: November 1-5

What to expect: Attendees of this four-day music blowout in scenic Reykjavik can catch nearly 130 artists sharing the stage — including US-based folk giants Mumford & Sons, Fleet Foxes and more.

Check out the full lineup then grab your tickets — but don’t forget to pack your dancing shoes.

Loy Krathong Festival

Where: Phuket, Thailand

When: November 3, 2017

What to expect: Cast your deepest wishes off to sea at this annual festival of good fortune. There are various rituals at the many Buddhist temples around Phuket during the day, but the main event starts at sunset when thousands of krathongs — small floating lanterns made of banana leaves and candles — are cast into rivers, lakes and oceans.

These tiny lanterns are meant to carry away the dreams and wishes of attendees — hopefully to be heard by the universe and not washed back ashore (which could be a sign of bad luck in the coming year!)

REEL Rock Film Tour

Where: Boulder, Denver, Colorado Springs, Durango

When: November 8-13

What to expect: Watch some of the world’s most heart-stopping footage of rock climbers and outdoor adventurers at this annual live film tour.

Though the REEL Rock tour has showings across the globe throughout the year, it will be making four stops through Colorado in early November and bringing with it appearances by athletes and film makers — plus a few surprise getaways.
